68. Ransom J. HOOKS18 was born on 22 June 1863 in Wayne County, North Carolina.11 In 1900 he was a farmer in Great Swamp Township, Wayne County, North Carolina.30,31,32 He "had large fruit orchards; shipped fruit all over." He appeared in the census in 1920 in Great Swamp Township, Wayne County, North Carolina.33 Ransom died of a self-inflicted gunshot on 24 February 1932 at the age of 68 in Great Swamp Township, Wayne County, North Carolina.11,31,34 The following came from an oral history interview of Ransom's daughter-in-law, Bertha Holland Hooks, widow of Bennett Hardy Hooks. This interview took place and was transcribed in the early 1980's:
"Ransom helped Bertha Hooks pay for the funeral of Bennett Hardy Hooks, her husband.
"Ransom gave money to son (Barnes Hooks) to build a brick house in the country so he could live with one of his children. After the house was built, his son said there was no room for him. Ransom committed suicide soon after.
"Bertha felt that she was cheated out of any inheritance from Ransom because his estate was settled without anyone letting her know about his death. She was told it was an oversight.
"He had been dead a little more than a year before Bertha found out. Her daughter Mary Louise wrote a letter to her grandfather (Ransom) and it was delivered to Ransom Pollard by mistake. (He was named after Ransom Hooks.) Ransom Pollard wrote Mary Louise to tell her that Ransom Hooks had died about a year earlier. This is how family found out."
He was buried on 25 February 1932 at Hooks-Bass Cemetery, S.R. 1354 (Herman Hooks Road) in Fremont, Wayne County, North Carolina.11,34

Ransom J. HOOKS and Sarah C. POPE were married on 31 January 1886 in Great Swamp Township, Wayne County, North Carolina.27,35 Sarah C. POPE27, daughter of Bennett POPE and Amanda BARNES, was born in 1864.35 She died before 1900 at the age of 36.32

Ransom J. HOOKS and Nancy Louisa "Lou" SASSER were married on 9 April 1901.27,30 Lou Sasser was Ransom Hooks' "last wife" Nancy Louisa "Lou" SASSER18, daughter of Benjamin SASSER and Ava HOLLAND, was born on 20 May 1853. She died on 7 February 1917 at the age of 63. She was buried at Hooks-Bass Cemetery, S.R. 1354 (Herman Hooks Road) in Fremont, Wayne County, North Carolina.
