Third Generation

11. Henry PROCTOR18,20,30,31,32 was born on 1 May 1889.20 The 1900 Census lists his birthdate as February 1889. He appeared in the census in 1900 in No. Ten Township, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.20 In 1910 he was a laborer at the farm of William H. and Sarah Bone in No. Fourteen Township, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.30 In 1920 Henry was a general farmer in Upper Town Creek Township, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.31 He died of congestive heart failure on 2 July 1968 at the age of 79 at Mathiesen Clinic in Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina.22,33,34 He was buried on 3 July 1968 at Haywood Cemetery in Moncure, Chatham County, North Carolina.33 He lived the early part of his married life in Edgecombe Co., NC. His wife Mary Ella Hinton inherited farm property, and they lived there during the first years of their marriage. He prospered as a tobacco farmer, and built a "pretty house" across the street from the farm (on Trap Range Road, inside a triangle of Rocky Mount, Tarboro, and Wilson, NC), which had carbide lights and other amenities that few people in that area had at the time. The farm also had abundant fruit trees, but the house Henry built is no longer standing. In 1925, according to his oldest daughter, he let an insurance man named Luther T. Bulluck talk him into trading homes -- though how he was talked into it or for what reason is unknown. On November 27, 1925, Henry and Mary deeded over all 49 acres of the land Mary had inherited from her aunt and uncle (minus two parcels totalling 4.5 acres which had been sold off some years earlier) to Bulluck and M.R. Robbins of Nash County. The purchase price was ten dollars and other "valuable considerations not herein mentioned." Bulluck and Robbins also agreed to take up the unpaid portion of "an indebtedness to Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company for an original amount of $1500." Henry moved his family to what his oldest daughter described as a "very ordinary house" in Lee Co., "on the lower road to Sanford," leaving their very nice home in Edgecombe Co. He lived in Lee and Chatham Counties (mostly Moncure, NC) the rest of his life. (sources: Ruth Proctor Covert, 5/27/2000; Elizabeth Proctor Storey, 7/19/2000; Edgecombe Co. Henry PROCTOR and Mary Ella HINTON were married on 27 August 1911 in No. Fourteen Township, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.14 They14 lived in Upper Town Creek Township, Edgecombe County, North Carolina in 1920.31 They31 lived at Highway 50 in Cape Fear Township, Chatham County, North Carolina in 1930.32 Mary Ella HINTON31,32, daughter of John HINTON and Mattie Cornelia STALLINGS, was born on 7 December 1893.5,35 She was living in 1910 at with her Uncle William Long and Aunt Malvina Stallings Long in Upper Town Creek Township, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.24 She died of cardio-respiratory arrest as a result of congestive heart failure on 25 February 1968 at the age of 74 at Mathiesen Clinic in Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina.35,36,37 Mary was buried on 27 February 1968 at Haywood Cemetery in Moncure, Chatham County, North Carolina.36 She was probably named after Mary Stallings Trevathan.22 When she was 10 or 12 years old, her mother died. Her father developed a severe drinking problem, and she had to keep house and cook. On visiting the house one day, her Uncle Gold Trevathan told her father to have two dresses made for her, and that he would be back to pick her up. She was raised by her Uncle Gold and Aunt Mary Trevathan in Pinetops, NC, until she was grown. From another uncle and aunt -- William H. Long (d. 19 Oct. 1913) and Malvina Hinton Long (d. 26 Feb. 1913) -- she inherited a farm in Edgecombe Co., NC. When she married Henry Proctor, it was on this property that they lived during the early part of their marriage. (source: Ruth Proctor Covert, 5/27/2000)
