William Jefferson CORNETT1,2 was born on 5 April 1781 in Virginia.1,2,3 He died on 15 October 1840 at the age of 59 in Linn County, Missouri.1,2,3,4 Genealogist Dann Norton confirmed the migration of at least three of these Cornett siblings to Kentucky: "Park and Lydwell go to Kentucky -- that is confirmed through chancery court in Goochland Co, and census records in KY. They appear in the same area as William Cornett when he married Nancy Shearer [Shiffer?] in 1811 in Lincoln Co, KY. (There is a Power of Attorney in Henrico between William and his brothers, and I might be able to find it on these microfilms.) The Shearer/Scherer[/Shiffer] family was from Henrico Co, VA, also. We know that William and Nancy named a son Lyddall (or Literal) -- probably after this brother. We also know William and Nancy used the Mosby name -- after the half-brother." (Dann Norton, 24 April 2014) William Jefferson CORNETT and Nancy SHEARER (SHIFFER?)2 were married on 30 June 1811 in Lincoln County, Kentucky.1,2,3 Nancy SHEARER (SHIFFER?)2 was born on 17 July 1789 in Virginia.3,4 She died on 18 June 1862 at the age of 72 in Linn County, Missouri.3,4 There are several family trees which give William Jefferson Cornett's wife as Nancy Shiffer (or Shaffer). However, genealogist and Cornett family expert Dann Norton says that "William's wife is probably Nancy Shearer, as I do find a Scherer family in Henrico Co, Virginia, and it would make sense he married a woman from his hometown then moved her out to the frontier." About this controversy, Norton notes that "the Shaffer/Shiffer believers have a whole family and lineage for Nancy Shiffer Cornett, and the Shearer/Scherer believers have a whole family and lineage for Nancy Shearer Cornett. Both cannot be true." He plans to continue his research into the issue, and this family history will reflect his findings.
